Medical/Health Care

In 1915, Dr. William D. James and Lillian Deur James, his wife, founded Hamlet Hospital and began a tradition in healthcare that has spanned the 20th century. Today the dream begun by the James family has prepared for the 21st Century by building its new 108,000 square foot State-of-the-Art medical facility. Construction of the new three-story 64-bed medical center began in May 1998 and the hospital staff began treating patients in the new facility on February 20, 2000.

Sandhills Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is a 64-bed acute care facility that provides quality medical care to Richmond and surrounding counties in both North and South Carolina. The hospital specializes in family medicine, pediatrics, nephrology, internal medicine, pulmonology, hematology, vascular surgery, laser and laproscopic surgery, orthopedics and emergency medicine. The emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day by physicians specially trained in emergency medicine. SRMC has comprehensive laboratory, imaging, and rehabilitation services.

Sandhills Regional Medical Center has actively recruited new physicians and healthcare providers for our community. The current staff consists of 27 active physician staff members, 21 courtesy and consulting staff members, 15 emergency department physicians and 17 allied health professional staff members.

The new facility recognizes the increase in outpatient and same day surgery requirements. Outpatient Surgery has been expanded to include nine outpatient bays. Two new endoscopy suites are planned, as is one cystoscopy suite. These are supported by a state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging department including radiology, fluoroscopy, radiological and vascular ultrasound, angiography, spiral CT and mammography.

Realizing that patient care goes beyond actual medical treatment, the new hospital providea a fully furnished Chapel to meet spiritual needs. Private consultation rooms are available for physicians and families. Family waiting areas are provided in all patient care units. In addition to a full service cafeteria and a gift shop, the hospital provides community education rooms for programs and conferences.

Growing to meet the healthcare needs of our community continues to be a primary goal at Sandhills Regional Medical Center. As technology constantly advances, we strive to provide the highest quality healthcare available.
