Job description:

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this class serve as a unit commander. The employee shall direct unit operations, monitor and evaluate work, review reports, provide back-up and expert guidance to staff. An employee in this class may be assigned to patrol, records and communications. Administrative work includes providing input on policy matters, recommending in-service training, conducting safety training, vehicle maintenance, scheduling manpower and completing time sheets for payroll. Supervisory responsibilities include managing the daily work activities of the unit, conducting employee performance counseling, mentoring, motivating and evaluating performance, conducting meetings to discuss and resolve operational problems, and being held accountable for the efficient operation of the unit. This work requires the application of modern law enforcement techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives. Work includes monitoring the environment and the behavior of individuals;

Duties and Responsibilities Work

· Meets duties and tasks of a police officer

· Serves as commander of the patrol division.

· Serves warrants and subpoenas; apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports to magistrate and/or County detention facilities

· Regulates and directs vehicular traffic at local schools and when traffic signal malfunctions or accidents require

· Operates a two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to police headquarters; maintains vehicle, weapons, and other equipment in standard working order.

· Advises the public on laws and local ordinances

· Develops and implements community outreach activities

· Mentor and monitor assigned staff

· Lead with ethical and legal obligations

· Maintain all fleet maintenance records

· Assists with fire and rescue calls as required

· Prepares and submits accurate written reports

· Assists with budget planning, tracking of expenditures, and processing expenditures.

Prepare monthly scheduling of all employees based on minimum coverage standards and all planned training.

· Ability to become certified Training Coordinator for the Agency

· Maintain all training records and scheduling for training of all staff members.

· Performs other related work as required

· Must achieve NCJA General Instructor within 1 year of hire. Specialized Instructor certification, such as Firearm Instructor, Axon Taser Instructor and/or HazMat Instructor, may be required depending on the necessity of the department after initial General Instructor certification.

· Serve as “On-Call” Detective on a rotating schedule for all administrative staff

· Willingness to attend additional training(s) deemed necessary by supervisor(s).

· Review and logging of body camera footage to determine training needs and policy/procedure adherence.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and have completed at least the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.. Must have previous Police supervisory experience.

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • Possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, however, not mandatory depending upon training and experience.

Distinguishing Features of the Class


An employee in this class is responsible for managing the City’s information technology systems including installing, configuring, and maintaining hardware and software applications, troubleshooting and resolving equipment failures, serving as the local area network administrator, updating systems, coordinating network, hardware and software contractors, and implementing automated systems for existing manual systems. The employee also works with City staff to identify efficiencies that can be obtained by utilizing technology. Work involves planning, organizing, and daily support and operation for the systems. The employee recommends hardware and software systems for purchase, performs and/or coordinates installations, performs repairs, and software and user support and training. The employee works in an inside environment. Call back and weekend work may be required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the City Manager and is evaluated through conferences, records and reports, and successful implementation of automated environments and programs.

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Plans, organizes and develops information technology systems to improve the      productivity of the City; establishes networks, configurations, various operating systems, platforms, security systems, system backup, anti-virus systems, and protocols.
  • Provides technical support to the computer software and hardware operations and users of the City's organization; provides trouble shooting and training.
  • Visits work sites or provides technical answers to diagnose and solve automation problems.
  • Manages network systems including analyzing needs, recommending upgrades,      assigning peripherals and providing set-up; administers active directory;      upgrades software for more efficient and effective use.
  • Provides advice and consultation to managers, supervisors, and employees on all      aspects of the City's information management systems.
  • Installs and maintains administrative and technical software packages.
  • Serves as liaison between the City, computer vendors, and hardware and software      technical contractors.
  • Serves as local network administrator; provides procedures, security, and performs back-ups.
  • Performs troubleshooting, upgrades, and repairs of systems; coordinates major      repairs and upgrades.
  • Develops and maintains the City’s Intranet and internet websites information including adding and removing information and recommending and implementing changes in appearance, function, and content; establishes and maintains hot spots for police vehicles, and other needs.
  • Installs and maintains CCTV systems and connect cabling, repairing faulty equipment, upgrading software and monitoring performance.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and upgrades to the City’s VoIP telephone system, and physical security system; oversees cell phone contracts and law      enforcement radio system and serves as liaison with vendors.
  • Works with departments such as Finance and Police on applications specific to their operations.

General Statement of Duties

Performs general and special duty law enforcement work to protect life and property in the City.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class performs a full range of general law enforcement duties. Work includes patrolling the city during an assigned shift; preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; and executing related assignments. Employees must exercise judgement, initiative and calm control when performing duties; more difficult problems are normally carried out under the direction of or in conjunction with a Police Sergeant. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from supervisors. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief of Police and is evaluated through review of reports and conference for effectiveness of programs and acceptance of the community.

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Sergeant to join our team. As a  Sergeant, you will play a crucial role in maintaining law and order,  ensuring public safety, and leading a team of officers effectively.

Job Description

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An  employee in this class participates in the operations of fire  suppression and emergency medical services on an assigned shift. The  employee performs a variety of technical, procedural, and regulatory  methods and techniques relating to fire suppression and prevention,  rescue, first aid, and equipment and apparatus operation. Responds to  emergency situations requiring emergency medical attention and performs  duties of an EMT. Acquires and maintains required State  certification for Firefighter I and EMT. Work is performed  under general supervision of the Fire Lieutenant.

Duties and Responsibilities Work

Responds  to fire alarms as a member of a firefighting team and participates in  the control and suppression of all types of fires, including fires in  residences, stores, offices and storage and other buildings as well as  public assembly, institution, industrial, brush, vehicle, aircraft, and  hazardous materials fires

May drive fire apparatus or other vehicles to incident scenes

Participates in rescue operations at fire scenes, accidents, hazardous areas, and other emergency situations

Renders first aid and assists other agencies in emergencies

Responds  to emergency medical calls and performs duties in accordance with  applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established  policies, procedures and protocols, and within established chain of  command; refers to policy manuals as necessary

Assesses  and evaluates situation at scenes of emergency response; surveys and  secures scene, requesting additional assistance, as necessary;  determines mechanism of injury and equipment needed to effect rescue and  initiation of treatment.

Participates  in continuous training and physical fitness programs, and in the  routine cleaning and maintenance of fire station facilities, grounds,  and equipment

Conducts inspections and tests of firefighting, rescue, and first aid equipment, apparatus, and fire hydrants

Participates  in pre-fire planning inspections, sketches building, and area plans  noting street and hydrant locations, obstacles, hazards, and other  features pertinent to the development of firefighting strategy and  rescue operations

Participates in salvage operations and identification of fire causes

Assists with presentations for fire division personnel and public groups

Preserves evidence of possible arson and circumstances causing medical emergencies.

Prepares a variety of reports, data, and written materials

Conducts periodic inspections and tests of fire hydrants, firefighting, rescue and first aid equipment and apparatus

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines

Good knowledge of the geography of the city, locations of fire hydrants, and building layouts

Good knowledge of modern fire suppression strategies, practices, and procedures

Good knowledge of safe and proper methods of operating firefighting and rescue equipment

Good knowledge of building construction and the effects of fire upon it

Good working knowledge of building codes and inspection procedures

Some knowledge of mechanics, first aid, chemistry, and record keeping

Skilled in the operation and maintenance of the various equipment used in the Fire Department

Skilled in the application of artificial respiration and first aid techniques

Ability  to learn and apply a variety of technical, procedural, and regulatory  methods and techniques relating to fire suppression and prevention,  rescue, first aid, and equipment and apparatus operation

Ability to effectively perform work of hazardous nature under adverse conditions

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public

Ability to maintain physical fitness and agility, and mental alertness during extended periods of work

Ability to follow instructions and work as a team member in a structured working environment

Ability  to effectively render first aid at fire, rescue, accident, or other  emergency scenes; ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate  reports.

Graduation  from high school or GED equivalency supplemented by training courses in  firefighting, fire prevention, CPR/first aid, rescue, apparatus and  equipment operation, and related fire sciences; or an equivalent  combination of education and experience.
